What is DVD Replication?

Replication refers to the pressing or manufacturing of DVD from raw polycarbonate. It differs to DVD Duplication in that rather than being recorded one at a time on DVD burners, the DVD data layer is physically stamped out during the manufacturing process. Printing on manufactured or pressed DVD is usually using screen or offset printing methods. Inkjet or thermal disc printing is often the norm for DVD duplication due to the lower typical volumes of duplicated runs. DVD manufacturing usually has minimum runs of 500 due to the setup and repro charges making lower volumes less cost effective. If you require DVDs turned around in just a day or two or you need a smaller amount of discs then make use of our DVD Duplication service.

Why DVD Replication?

Whether you need DVDs for retail, either as an independent film distributor or as a content owner, or a run of promotional DVD for marketing use; pressing your DVD run will always give you the best value on projects of 1000 discs or more. In these days of Video on Demand and streaming, DVD is still the preferred option and the most reliable. Delivering a disc means you are able to guarantee playback in a DVD player connected to a TV. For an important corporate message, a ‘signed for’ delivery of a DVD offers more guarantees than an emailed link. A link can potentially be blocked by firewalls and is subject to a users network connection. The UK is sadly way behind the rest of the world in broadband speeds and availability, lagging behind countries such as Lithuania and South Korea. DVD replication will always deliver a stutter free experience regardless of the users setup.

What type of DVD printing do you offer?

We offer both DVD screen printing or offset printing on DVD replication projects. Offset (sometimes known as DVD litho printing) is the standard for full colour (or CMYK) print. When you need to print Pantone colours or your design is based on just two or three solid colours then DVD screen printing is the best option. We can also combine the two processes for special effects, such as applying a spot UV lacquer to a CMYK offset print.

How does DVD Replication work?

First we take your DVD master then create a glass master, it gets a bit technical so for more info see DVD replication explained. Then from the glass master a stamper is made. This stamper can be thought of as a mirror image of your data. Raw plastic (or polycarbonate) is then melted and the stamper physically “stamps” out your DVDs. Once the plastic is formed it is coated with metal to protect it and then it is printed. For a dual layer disc (DVD9) the process is effectively done twice and the two layers are bonded or glued together before the metal coating is applied. It’s not the same process as DVD duplication and is more suited to larger DVD runs or for retail ready product.

Can you help with the DVD mastering?

Yes! We have a full DVD authoring facility and can take your DVD project files and turn them into DVD replication ready masters. Alternatively we can author from any tape format or digital video file. We understand that in this economic climate it is imperative that the most cost effective route to product is achieved, so if you want to handle the DVD authoring in house we can check finished masters to ensure that everything works as it should and there will be no technical hiccups.

Can you help design DVD covers?

Yes, our in-house design team can take your brand guidelines and create print ready artwork for all forms of DVD boxes and DVD packaging. We can layout images and text for Digipaks, DVD sleeves, card wallets and other bespoke DVD packaging.
